Khaled Khalifa was born 1964 in Syria. He published his first novel “The Guardian of Deception”, in 1993, to wide critical acclaim. His third novel, “In Praise of Hatred”, gripped the attention of the international press in 2006: it was translated into 8 languages, short-listed for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction Prize in 2013.Khalifa’s fourth novel “No Knives in this City’s Kitchens” was published in 2013 and won the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature, after which it was translated into French, Dutch, and English. His latest novel “Death is Hard Labor” came out in 2015. Khalifa has also written many television dramas, including “Memoirs of Al-Jalali and the award-winning “Relative Calm”.
